It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all of the information in our BodyGraphs, especially when it comes to the detail of the circuits. First and foremost, always refer back to your Human Design type and profile. After you consider your type and profile, look at your centers because the centers themselves form your individual life force energy.
Centers and gates create your channels which route the energy from your centers like an electrical circuit. Everyone has a unique circuitry that plays an important role in our day-to-day lives, and how we are wired in this way is how we have survived as a species.
There are three main circuits: Individual / Transformation, Tribal / Sustainability and Collective / Synergy. These three circuits contain several sub-circuits: Integration / Unifying, Centering / Calibration, Knowing / Gnostic, Defense / Nurture, Ego / Economic, Logic / Pattern, and Sensing / Miracle.
How Human Design Circuits Influence Our Purpose And Place In The World
We all have a purpose in our communities. If we are to survive as a species, we have to grow and change. We have to use logic and reasoning to make decisions, and we have to communicate with each other. Now, just as all Human Design types have a strategy, all humans have a circuit that tells them how they are contributing to humanity– how they will best serve the greater good.
The Individual Circuit / Transformation

If you have Individual Circuitry, you are here to metamorphosis and develop the world around you. This energy was the first to develop in human evolution because it ensures survival. You are here to be unique, which will lead you to a life as a lone wolf.
Being an outsider allows you to see what the group needs in order to survive and thrive. Your community will utilize your innovative and unique ideas, but you will not be the one to implement them – leave the doing to those with the Tribal Circuit.
Individual Circuitry contains two sub-circuits. The Knowing Circuit holds a deep all-knowing truth. This knowledge is not based on perception but on universal truths. The Centering Circuit is all about self-love and individuality.
The Tribal Circuit / Sustainability

Those with Tribal Circuitry are here for the people of the world. This Circuit places the needs of the many over their own needs. You are emotional, caring, and nurturing. If you are considered touchy-feely you probably have the Tribal Circuit, and you need to engage with others physically.
Those with the Individual Circuit are going to bring you their ideas. It is your path to implement their ideas for the greater good and survival of your community.
Tribal Circuitry’s two sub-circuits are Ego and Defense. The Ego Circuit holds the energy for resources, such as business, marriage, and management. The Defense Circuit is an intense energy that contains: the creation of resources, intense logic and reason, war and peace, education, and procreation. Defense is deeply primal and responsible for the success, or failure, of a society.
The Collective Circuit / Synergy

Collective energy supports the creation of infrastructure for the organization of institutions like schools and Government as well as sharing the capacity of the human experience.
Collective circuitry has two subcircuits – Logic and Sensing.
The Logic Circuit has consistency, duplication, and order. Everything we know has been shared with us from the Collective and has been verified over time establishing cultural patterns, laws, and habits. These patterns help us to predict what is to come based on past patterns.
The Sensing Circuit is about telling stories from the past and incorporating new experiences into the bigger story of humanity. This circuit is holistic, right-brained, sensual, and experiential. Ephianies, aha moments, and curiosity are contained within this circuit. It’s here where we push the boundaries of what is possible for the Collective.

How Circuits Can Help You Figure Out What’s Going On
I want you to imagine the old-school Christmas lights. One bulb goes out, and the whole thing doesn’t work. Now if you don’t understand your circuitry, that doesn’t mean that your whole Human Design is in the dark. But when you understand how energies flow through you and your circuits, you can understand how the mechanics of evolution and of humanity play an important role in our future.
Just like the bulbs in the Christmas lights, we all have a purpose that plays into the greater good of humanity. Without us, our world and our communities can not shine.
There are three major circuits: the Individual, the Tribal, and the Collective. Each of these circuits plays a unique role in sharing information, values, and survival strategies, and they all work in conjunction to further humanity.
The Individual Circuit is all about initiating change on the individual level. When one person gets a new idea or discovers a new way to do something, this energy is represented in the Individual Circuit. The energy here varies from the norm; it mutates, and consequently, it inspires change in others.
When the individual discovers a new perspective or a different way of doing things, they bring this change to the tribe, represented by the Tribal Circuit. Members of the tribe then spread the change to the greater whole of humanity or the Collective Circuit.
Imagine a small tribe of people living on the prairie. It’s spring, and the tribe is preparing to set up their summer camp.
There is a tribe member; let’s call him Steve. Steve is a little odd. He’s not really into the whole-together aspect of being in a tribe. He cares about his people, but he often goes out and does his own thing.
This year, Steve, who has a lot of Individual circuitry defined in his chart, decides to set up his summer home on the bluffs of a small creek away from his tribe. He enjoys his alone time, and while building his shelter for the summer, he discovers a new way to bind a large stone to a stick, and he makes a hammer that is a great help in getting his new home constructed.
Frank, Steve’s brother, comes down to the creek to visit. Frank has a lot of Tribal circuitry in his chart. He wants to make sure his brother is okay out there by himself. While he visits Steve, Frank sees the cool new hammer. He is astonished at how useful it is and quickly sees the potential for this new tool to make constructing the new summer camp much easier. He knows that the faster the camp is built, the more time there is to gather food and other resources for the winter.
Frank asks Steve if he can build a hammer for him to take home. Steve is more than happy to make his brother one of the hammers, and Frank returns to the tribe with his new tool.
After using the hammer very successfully, Frank has a lot of extra time on his hands, so he doubles his hunting time. He now has a lot of extra pelts and furs to trade with other tribes. As Frank packs up to leave on his trading journey, he decides to throw his new hammer in his bag. Along his trading route, he shows his hammer to several other tribes who ask him to make them hammers in exchange for pots and other valuable commodities.
Frank returns home with many extra resources for his tribe. After a few years, the hammer has become a staple in many tribes. Frank’s daughter, and her Collective circuitry, watches her Father use this new tool and helps her Father, and Uncle, set up a store that sells the hammers. Hammers become a staple of the prairie and later all of humanity.
When an idea is adaptive and successfully spread from the individual to the tribe, and from the tribe to the collective a critical mass of energy evolves, and the idea becomes an integral part of the human experience and part of the human story.
Someone, somewhere, had the idea for the hammer, for the printing press, for the steam engine, for the computer, and for the smartphone. An individual has the idea. The idea is taken to the tribe, who then spreads it to the collective.
Your circuits and gates will help you understand your place in the world. Are you the individual with the ideas? Are you a tribe-focused member? Or can you see how to help all of humanity?
