What are the Nodes In Human Design and Astrology?
The North and South Nodes in Human Design, also known as the Lunar Nodes, are planetary points that illuminate your life purpose but also the energetic forces driving you toward a greater connection to your life purpose. The North Node is where you’re going, and the South Node is where you came from.
These powerful astrological placements offer amazing insight into your greatest strengths, weaknesses, and potential.
What Roles Do Our Nodes Play in Human Design
The Lunar Nodes hold a special place in Human Design. Nodes are not physical bodies but rather calculated points where the paths of the Moon and Earth intersect. They mark the extremes of these orbits’ intersections. While the Incarnation Cross activations indicate our life purpose, the Lunar Node activations reveal the people and environments we are destined to encounter in this world.
Since they are not tangible objects, the Lunar Nodes do not influence us through physical streams like neutrinos. Instead, they reflect the Moon’s geometric position, shaping the trajectory of our life path. The themes associated with the Lunar Nodes act as external guideposts that influence our journey through life.
Our South Node is our past

The position of your South Node represents a comfort zone and a familiar way of being that you tend to hold onto. It signifies an aspect of your nature where you often act without awareness, which can dominate your life and disrupt your balance. In previous lifetimes, you have mastered this area, leading you to unconsciously navigate your current life in this manner because it feels effortless. However, this tendency can cause you to avoid the more challenging, growth-oriented path symbolized by your North Node.
Our North Node is our future

The position of your Personality North Node is pivotal in your design. Once you understand and embrace it, everything else in your design will align seamlessly. The North Node reveals your evolutionary path in this lifetime, with every aspect of your design supporting this journey.
Your North Node symbolizes where you’re designed to go in this lifetime. It reveals the energy you need to learn and harness to fulfill your design. The North Node offers insight into the passions, talents, and growth you need to access in order to live in true alignment with your energy.
Ra Uru Hu describes your North Node as your unique way of ‘seeing.’ To truly live your purpose, you must ‘see’ your true self. The Cross of Life he refers to—the Sun/Earth and Nodal axes—shapes your sense of identity and direction.
The Nodal Cycle
The Nodes follow a cycle of 18 to 19 years, meaning that about every 18 years or so, your Nodes return to their positions at the time of your birth. This period is an opportunity to re-evaluate your life, examining where you might have chosen a safer, more comfortable path that may have limited you.
The mid-point of the Nodal cycle, around 9 to 10 years, is also significant. During this time, the transiting South Node aligns with the North Node in your design, while the transiting North Node aligns with your South Node. At this mid-point, you might feel discomfort and pressure to take risks and step outside your comfort zone. It’s a powerful time to be alert to new opportunities that may arise.
Where are your Nodes?

Examine where your Personality or Soul Purpose North Node is located in your design. (It depends on which software you use as to whether it’s Personality or Soul Purpose) Take some time to reflect on how you might find this energy challenging or how you may avoid engaging with it.
Consider how your Personality or Soul Purpose South Node feels comfortable, and safe, for you. What could your genius be, as indicated by the South Node? How might your North Node offer you the skills to develop that genius?
If you’re not familiar with the Gates, use the Centers instead. For example, if your South Node is in the Solar Plexus Center and your North Node is in the Sacral Center, you could explore how you are more comfortable focusing on emotional clarity rather than on what you usually commit energy to.
If your Nodes are in an undefined Center, you are always influenced by the energies of those around you. This isn’t a bad thing; it’s what you choose to experience, and there is a reason for it. Pay special attention to the other planets in that undefined Center and the adjoining open gate.
The Magic of the North Node in Astrology and Human Design
North Nodes are astronomical points where the orbit of the Moon intersects with the Earth’s path around the Sun. Nodes are calculated mathematically, so they aren’t a physical place but rather an energetic touchstone.
Each North Node has a corresponding South Node. Essentially, the South Node shows you what experiences you already brought with you into this life – things that you understand and that you’ve mastered. The North Node shows you the new journey of your life.
While the North Node may feel new or even uncomfortable, it will also feel the most rewarding. If you continue on the path of your South Node, you will be limited in the ability to experience your desires during this lifetime.
Aries North Node (Libra South Node)
When the North Node is in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius), it suggests that the soul needs to reignite its passion and reclaim its inner fire. If your North Node is in Aries, your South Node is in Libra.
The Libra South Node is like the grand, opulent halls of old Versailles—beautiful and refined, but lacking in authenticity.
If you have a South Node in Libra, it’s time to stop worrying about offending others. Don’t be afraid to rock the boat, take risks, and stand up for yourself. A bit of selfishness can be healthy.
Taurus North Node (Scorpio South Node)
If your North Node is in Taurus, then your South Node is in Scorpio, which might cause you to feel like disaster is always imminent. This can lead to a constant sense of insecurity, believing the world is unsafe.
Your Taurus North Node encourages you to find a sense of safety and security in life and within your own body. Instead of overcomplicating matters, as is the Scorpio tendency, embrace the wisdom of simple solutions. Before seeking therapy, prioritize getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and eating well. Focus on feeling grateful for all the reasons you are safe, rather than always searching for evidence that you are not.
Gemini North Node (Sagittarius South Node)
If your North Node is in Gemini, then your South Node is in Sagittarius. An example of the Sagittarius South Node, in the science fiction series Dune the character Leto the God Emperor. Leto is omniscient and prescient, essentially a know-it-all, which turns his life into a dull prison because nothing can surprise him anymore. Knowing everything closes you off from wonder and delight, making the world feel small and boring.
Your Gemini North Node encourages you to rediscover your curiosity. Be open to different ideas and truly listen to others—they might just surprise you.
Cancer North Node (Capricorn South Node)
If your North Node is in Cancer, then your South Node is in Capricorn. This placement means you are heavily focused on duty and responsibility. When I think of the Capricorn South Node, I envision Atlas from Greek mythology, who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.
With a Cancer North Node, the universe is encouraging you to prioritize your own well-being first, like putting on your oxygen mask before assisting others. It’s perfectly fine to set down your burdens and focus on self-care, which is not selfish. The key lesson is to recognize that your inherent worth is not tied to your achievements or what you can provide for others.
Leo North Node (Aquarius South Node)
If your North Node is in Leo, then your South Node is in Aquarius. Those with an Aquarius South Node often feel misunderstood and tend to withdraw. There’s a habit of keeping knowledge and wisdom to oneself, assuming others won’t understand or appreciate it. However, it’s a new chapter now, urging the unconventional to step forward and share your unique message.
The Leo North Node calls for active engagement and, akin to the lion representing Leo, encourages you to roar and make your voice heard. Instead of staying on the sidelines, it’s time to place yourself center stage and embrace recognition.
Virgo North Node (Pisces South Node)
If your North Node is in Virgo, then your South Node is in Pisces. The Pisces South Node focuses on spirituality and transcending earthly matters, while the Virgo North Node calls for grounding and reconnection.
This nodal combination serves as a reminder that wisdom and insight hold true value only when applied practically and beneficially to others. It also cautions against ego traps within spiritual pursuits, advocating instead for embracing Virgoan virtues of humility and service as safeguards.
Libra North Node (Aries South Node)
If your North Node is in Libra, then your South Node is in Aries. Aries, governed by Mars, the Roman god of war, shapes a worldview where survival often requires struggle and self-reliance.
The North Node in Libra, guided by Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, invites a shift towards decompression, inner peace, and recalibrating equilibrium. Embrace the lesson of asking for help and trusting in the support of friends and loved ones, challenging the belief that you must navigate life alone.
Scorpio North Node (Taurus South Node)
If your North Node is in Scorpio, then your South Node is in Taurus. The Taurus South Node tends to resist change with a sluggish demeanor. Picture the scene from A Wrinkle in Time when Meg Murray arrives in a suburb of Camazotz, where children mindlessly bounce the same ball at the same time. People go through the motions of life without questioning or exploring; there’s a comfort in avoiding challenging truths—a “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” mentality.
The Scorpio North Node urges you to embrace action by daring to question and critically analyze—even if the truths you uncover are unsettling and daunting. Embrace life’s complexities, venture beyond the safety of predictability, and dive back into the vast ocean of existence with all its awe and fear.
Sagittarius Node (Gemini South Node)
If your North Node is in Sagittarius, then your South Node is in Gemini. With a Gemini South Node, you’re immersed in managing details everywhere, all at once. Life may feel like a whirlwind of constant busyness, leaving little room for stepping back to gain perspective or contemplate life’s deeper meanings.
However, your Sagittarius North Node encourages you to do just that—to step back, gain elevation, and take a bird’s-eye view of your circumstances. Your life, akin to a Monet painting, appears as smudges and dots up close. Only by stepping back can you begin to discern the potential Impressionist masterpiece your life might truly be.
Capricorn North Node (Cancer South Node)
If your North Node is in Capricorn, then your South Node is in Cancer. With a Cancer South Node, your focus naturally revolves around caring for your loved ones—whether they’re family by blood or chosen family. You instinctively respond to their needs and often feel compelled to shield them from life’s challenges.
Now, your task is to nurture in a Capricorn manner, which involves holding people accountable and guiding them toward meeting standards of responsibility. Teaching others to stand independently is part of this journey. Remember, setting standards and maintaining discipline are also acts of love. Embrace the call to uphold your personal dignity, even if it means overcoming concerns that your standards might be perceived as cold by others.
Aquarius North Node (Leo South Node)
If your North Node is in Aquarius, then your South Node is in Leo, indicating a comfort with attention and often finding yourself in leadership roles as a result. You understand your role and perform it adeptly. However, this may lead you to suppress your true individuality, hiding quirks and eccentricities for fear of judgment.
The Aquarius North Node encourages you to release the need for public approval and instead prioritize alignment with your own moral values. Remember, your true essence is not defined by others’ perceptions of you.
Pisces North Node (Virgo South Node)
If your North Node is in Pisces, then your South Node is in Virgo. The Virgo South Node suggests a tendency to internalize negative qualities such as shame, guilt, and excessive self-criticism. This can lead to a belief that redemption must be earned through hard work and struggle.
Your Pisces North Node urges you to embrace the truth that everyone, including yourself, deserves love, compassion, and kindness unconditionally. You don’t need to prove your worthiness through effort. In the realm of universal love, the cosmos has already granted you acceptance—simply accept it without reservation.
