Human Design Are the New Birth Charts

Birth Charts vs. Human Design – an Overview

Birth charts and Human Design are both systems that use a person’s birth information to create personalized profiles, but they come from different traditions and use different methodologies:

  1. Birth Charts (Natal Charts) in Astrology:
  • Part of traditional astrology
  • Based on precise birth time, date, and location
  • Maps the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and other celestial points
  • Divided into 12 zodiac signs and 12 houses
  • Each planet and its position is interpreted for personality traits, strengths, challenges, and potential life events
  • Aspects (angles) between planets add layers of interpretation
  • Aims to provide insight into personality traits and life patterns
  • Used for personality analysis, relationship compatibility, and timing of life events
  1. Human Design:
  • A newer system developed in the 1980s by Ra Uru Hu
  • Combines elements from astrology, I Ching, Kabbalah, and quantum physics
  • Also uses exact birth time, date, and location
  • Incorporates data from 64 hexagrams of the I Ching
  • Uses positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and other celestial bodies, but interprets them differently from traditional astrology
  • Creates a bodygraph showing 9 energy centers, 64 gates, and 36 channels
  • Defines 5 energy types: Manifestors, Generators, Manifesting Generators, Projectors, and Reflectors
  • Provides strategies for decision-making and living according to one’s “design”
  • Focuses on energy types, centers, and decision-making strategies

The main connection is that both systems use birth data to create individualized profiles. However, Human Design incorporates astrological elements as just one part of its more complex system.

Connections and Differences Between Birth Charts and Human Design:

  1. Birth Data:

Both systems rely on precise birth information, recognizing that the moment of birth is significant.

  1. Celestial Influences:

Both use planetary positions, but Human Design adds layers from other systems and interprets these positions differently.

  1. Individuality:

Both systems aim to provide highly personalized insights, but through different frameworks.

  1. Scope:

Astrology tends to be broader, covering various life areas, while Human Design focuses more on decision-making processes and how individuals interact with the world.

  1. Historical Context:

Astrology has ancient roots, while Human Design is a modern system that incorporates elements from various traditions.

  1. Interpretation:

Astrological interpretations can vary widely between practitioners, while Human Design aims for a more standardized interpretation based on its unique system.

  1. Time Factors:

Astrology uses various timing techniques (transits, progressions) for ongoing insights, while Human Design focuses more on unchanging aspects of a person’s nature.

  1. Energy Focus:

Human Design emphasizes energy flow and types, which is not a primary focus in traditional astrology.

  1. Practical Application:

Astrology often provides general insights and timing, while Human Design offers specific strategies for decision-making and interacting with others.

While there are these connections, it’s important to note that many practitioners of traditional astrology do not incorporate Human Design, and vice versa. Some people find value in both systems, using them complementarily, while others prefer one over the other.

Now that we’ve seen the overview, let’s delve deeper into birth charts and Human Design.

What is a Birth Chart?

A birth chart, also known as a natal chart, is a map of the positions of celestial bodies at the exact moment of a person’s birth. It is based on the principles of astrology, which believes that the positions of the planets, the Sun, the Moon, and other celestial objects at the time of birth can provide insights into an individual’s personality traits, strengths, weaknesses, and life events.

A birth chart is calculated using the individual’s birth date, time, and location. It consists of various elements, including the zodiac signs, the positions of the planets in the signs and houses of the astrological wheel, and aspects (angles) formed between the planets.

What Do Birth Charts Tell You?

Birth charts provide a detailed snapshot of a person’s unique characteristics and potentialities.

Here are some of the things birth charts can tell you:

Sun sign

The position of the Sun in the zodiac at the time of birth represents the core essence of a person’s personality, ego, and general life direction.

Moon sign

The position of the Moon in the zodiac reveals an individual’s emotional nature, instincts, and unconscious patterns of behavior.

Ascendant (rising sign)

The sign that was on the eastern horizon at the time of birth, known as the ascendant, influences the individual’s outward personality, physical appearance, and how they interact with the world.

Planetary placements

The positions of the planets in the birth chart indicate different areas of life where certain energies and influences are at play. For example, the position of Venus can reveal information about one’s love life and relationships, while Mars can provide insights into one’s drive, ambition, and assertiveness.

Houses

The birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each representing specific areas of life such as career, relationships, home, and spirituality. The planets in each house can shed light on the individual’s experiences and focus within those areas.

Aspects

Aspects are the angles formed between planets in the birth chart. They indicate the relationships and interactions between different planetary energies, revealing potential strengths, challenges, and patterns in the individual’s life.

By interpreting and analyzing the various elements in a birth chart, astrologers can provide insights into a person’s psychological makeup, life purpose, potential talents, and areas of growth.

How Are Birth Charts Reflected In Human Design Charts?

Your birth chart in astrology and your Human Design chart share a common foundation: the precise positioning of the planets at the moment of your birth. Astrology utilizes a wheelhouse natal chart, often referred to as a birth chart, while Human Design employs a body graph chart.

Why Are Human Design Charts Even Better Than Astrological Birth Charts?

Traditional astrological interpretation involves blending the meanings of planets with the signs and houses they occupy, as well as considering the aspects they form with other natal planets. This combination reveals how a planet expresses itself in the chart. The nature of a horoscope planet is influenced by its sign, house, and the aspects it makes with other elements in the chart.

In contrast, the Human Design chart replaces houses with gates, with a total of 64 gates based on the I Ching’s hexagrams. Each gate in Human Design has its own assigned meaning, which is more concise than the contemplations of the I Ching. In Human Design, the meaning of the gate is blended with the meaning of the planet.

Furthermore, each gate is divided into six lines, and each line carries its own significance. In Human Design, the meaning of the planet is blended within a gate and its line. With 12 planets, two nodes, and various asteroids to consider, combined with 64 gates and six lines, the possibilities for combinations are vast.

Unlike in astrology, the planets in the Human Design chart do not form aspects with each other. Instead, their location within the bodygraph determines your energy Type (Projector, Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, or Reflector). Each Type comes with a specific Strategy and Authority. Additionally, the interplay between defined and undefined centers in the chart gives you your unique Design.

How to Read the Birth Chart Section Of Your Human Design Chart

When you are looking at your Human Design chart, On the left side of the chart, flanking either side of the body graph (depending on who provided your Human Design chart),  you will see a series of red and black numbers and planetary symbols. This is called your birth chart. Your birth chart is fixed; it does not change during the course of your life.

Your Unconscious Personality

Your unconscious personality is defined by the red elements on your birth chart—these are aspects of your personality that are consistent but unconscious, meaning you don’t really have much control over these aspects of your personality. As we grow, and mature through our life, many of us become more aware of our unconscious personality. Often, your family and loved ones usually know the unconscious elements of who you are.

The date in red is your unconscious birthday. The unconscious birthday is roughly three months prior to your birth and coincides with a large spurt in brain development in the cerebral cortex while a baby is in utero. It is approximately eighty-eight astrological degrees from the moment of your birth.

Your Conscious Personality

The elements on the chart that are black are aspects of your personality that you are consciously aware of. To an extent, you have control over these parts of yourself.

Gate Numbers

The large numbers listed in either red or black are gate numbers. There are sixty-four of these, and they are represented in the body graph. For more information on Gates CLICK HERE.

Gate Lines

You will see that next to each gate number there is a smaller number that looks like an exponent. This is a gate line. They are numbered one through six.

The gate lines are unique to each chart. Not every chart has all six lines. It depends on the position of the planets at the moment of birth. Lines are like seconds when we measure time. Here are the gate lines’ six unique archetypes:

Line 1: Investigator (The Resource)

Line 2: Hermit (The Responder)

Line 3: Martyr (The Explorer)

Line 4: Opportunist (The Stabilizer)

Line 5: Heretic (The Visionary Leader)

Line 6: Role Model (The Adept)

Profiles

Your profile is determined by the gate lines in your conscious and unconscious Sun sign. Everyone comes into the world with a specific profile and purpose.

Profiles tell you about major life themes that you will encounter, and they illustrate how your personality interacts with the world as you move toward fulfilling your purpose. Your profile can be thought of as an explanation of your conscious and unconscious archetypes and the themes associated with those archetypes.

Most people are aware of their unconscious profile, but because it is unconscious they do not have much control over the expression of it.

The twelve profiles are combinations of two gate lines (the conscious line followed by the unconscious line):

1/3 Investigator/Martyr (Resource/Explorer)

1/4 Investigator/Opportunist (Resource/Stabilizer)

2/4 Hermit/Opportunist (Responder/Stabilizer)

2/5 Hermit/Heretic (Responder/Visionary Leader)

3/5 Martyr/Heretic (Explorer/Visionary Leader)

3/6 Martyr/Role Model (Explorer/Adept)

4/6 Opportunist/Role Model (Stabilizer/Adept)

4/1 Opportunist/Investigator (Stabilizer/Resource)

5/1 Heretic/Investigator (Visionary Leader/Resource)

5/2 Heretic/Hermit (Visionary Leader/Responder)

6/2 Role Model/Hermit (Adept/Responder)

6/3 Role Model/Martyr (Adept/Explorer)

The Planetary Symbols

The planetary symbols indicate the astrological position of the energies in your chart at the moment of your birth. Each planet is covered, starting with the position of your sun gate at the top and ending with the position of your Pluto gate.

Incarnation Cross

The Incarnation Cross is basically a person’s life purpose. It tells us who they are, what they are driven to do, their foibles, follies, and ultimately their destiny if they choose.

The meaning of each cross is a combination of the four gate energies that comprise it. The gate energy in the conscious sun position—the top right black number—is the most significant of the four. All of the other energies in your cross, and in your whole chart, are expressed through the conscious sun gate energy.

Over the course of a year, the sun will move through all sixty-four gates. There are 192 possible Incarnation Cross combinations, each one a reflection of the solar and earth transits. The Incarnation Cross gives us much more information than a mere sun sign in astrology. It offers a deeper explanation of the path of a soul and the journey of a lifetime.
