What Is A Body Graph?
A BodyGraph is a visual representation used in the Human Design System to illustrate your unique energetic blueprint, showing how you are designed to interact with the world and make decisions.
When you look at your BodyGraph, or in other words, your Human Design chart, (get your BodyGraph for free here,) you will see a series of numbers and planetary symbols next to a triangle composed of a myriad of lines, geometric shapes, colors, and the profile of a person. This triangle called the body graph, is the visual compilation of all the numbers and written information on your chart. The body graph is, in essence, a “map” of your unique energy configuration.

The Body Graph consists of several key elements:
- Centers: These are nine geometric shapes (representing the chakras) that can be either defined (colored in) or undefined (white). Each center corresponds to different aspects of your life, such as identity, communication, emotions, and intuition.
- Channels: Lines connecting the centers. Defined channels (colored in) indicate consistent energy flows between centers, while undefined channels (white) indicate areas of variability and influence from others.
- Gates: Specific points along the channels, each associated with particular traits and characteristics. Defined gates are colored in and contribute to the overall definition of the channels.
- Profile: A combination of two numbers that provide insight into your personality and life purpose. The profile is derived from the positions of the sun and earth in the astrological chart.
- Type: One of the four primary types (Manifestor, Generator, Projector, Reflector), which describes your general way of interacting with the world and your energy strategy.
- Authority: The specific way you are designed to make decisions, based on your unique MyBodyGraph configuration.
- Not-Self Theme: Indicates the emotional theme you experience when not living in alignment with your design, helping you identify areas where adjustments may be needed.
Understanding and analyzing your BodyGraph can help you gain deeper self-awareness, improve decision-making, and align more closely with your natural strengths and tendencies.

As social creatures, we are all subject to sociocultural conditioning. We are all taught explicitly, and implicitly, how to think, act, speak, define success, and so much more. These social rules lead us to feel inadequate and broken because we can’t ever seem to do it right. Human Design teaches us that each energy type has a different way of creating and making decisions.
We all have unlimited potential for wealth, health, good relationships, and happiness. It’s just that we are each uniquely designed, and therefore our definitions of wealth, health, good relationships, and happiness will be different for each of us. Your Human Design chart will be your best friend because it shows you how to energetically approach your life.

How Can I Get My Body Graph?
In mainstream astrology, you only need to know your date of birth to know your sign. Many refer to Human Design as the “new” astrology, and in order to start your journey in Human Design you will need your: date of birth, time of birth, and the city, state, and country where you were born.

You will need your time and place of birth to run your Body Graph.
How important is my time of birth in calculating my body graph?
Time of birth is vitally important for an accurate Human Design chart. There can be up to four gate changes in a 24-hour period and sometimes even more than four gate changes. Without an accurate birth time, your chart will be inaccurate.
If you do not know what time you entered the world, it is recommended you get a Quantum Human Design reading with someone who can adjust your chart to determine the most accurate reading possible.
What Will My Body Graph Tell Me?
Each Human Design chart has three parts: the body graph, the birth chart, and the keynotes. To start, we need to look at the chart as a whole. If you look closely at the chart, you might see some visual evidence of the influencing wisdom behind Human Design. For example, the geometric shapes (called centers) look very similar to the seven chakras.
If you turn the chart upside down, it looks very similar to the Tree of Life from the Kabbalah. Or you may notice that sixty-four numbers appear on the chart. These numbers, called gates, correlate to the sixty-four hexagrams from the I Ching. In the I Ching, a hexagram is composed of six stacked horizontal lines where each line is either yang (an unbroken or solid line) or yin (broken, an open line with a gap in the center).
Though you can see pieces of these ancient wisdom teachings in the chart, Human Design is something new and unique, a brand-new tool to help people in a brand-new way.

Human Design Types
The five types written in the language of Quantum Human Design and traditional Human Design are the Initiator/Manifestor, the Time Bender/Manifesting Generator, the Alchemist/Generator, the Orchestrator/Projector, and the Calibrator/Reflector. You can find your type at the bottom of your Human Design chart in the Keynotes.
Each of the five personality types has a unique strategy for making decisions and being in the world. Knowing your type can help you develop confidence and trust in your capacity to make reliable decisions for yourself.
Manifestor (Initiator)
Spiritual Purpose: Translate Divine Inspiration into action.
Quantum Purpose: To initiate people into the frequency of transformation and creativity through direct access to the Quantum Pulse.
Emotional Theme: Anger.
Manifestors are here to get things started. They have unique bursts of intense energy that are followed by equally intense periods of rest. Manifestors’ intensity is felt by everyone around them and inspires change in the lives of those they come in contact with.
Generator (Alchemist)
Spiritual Purpose: Turn inspiration into form.
Quantum Purpose: To physically manifest creativity and express it through devotion.
Emotional Theme: Frustration
At 35% of the population, Generators are here to get stuff done. Generators are here to respond to the needs of the world and their seemingly endless energy is perfect for making real change.
Manifesting Generator (Time Bender)
Spiritual Purpose: Turn inspiration into form.
Quantum Purpose: To physically manifest creativity and speed up the quantum process and linear time.
Emotional Theme: Frustration and Anger
If Generators are here to get stuff done, Manifesting Generators are here to get a little bit of everything done. Generators tend to be focused on one area while Manifesting Generators are good at a little bit of everything. They are trailblazers and inspirational to those around them.
Projector (Orchestrator)
Spiritual Purpose: Here to anchor the energetic template of what we are here to create, to align the energy of the world and heal the planet’s energy.
Quantum Purpose: To hold the energy template of what’s to come and clear the vibration of the collective consciousness.
Emotional Theme: Bitterness.
At 20% of the population, Projectors are here to guide the world. Projectors have a unique and intense gift of being able to truly see those around them and offer meaningful advice.
Reflector (Calibrator)
Spiritual Purpose: To be the barometer of the alignment of humanity with Heart.
Quantum Purpose: To mirror to others the Human condition and Human potential.
Emotional Theme: Disappointment.
Representing less than 1 per cent of the population, the Reflector is the rarest of the Human Design types. The Reflector is a truly unique, unusually sensitive person who must be in the right place with the right people to experience true happiness.
Authority in Human Design
Following your Authority is key to knowing how to make the right decisions for you.
Actualizing Authority (Splenic Authority)
Actualizing Authority means you are designed to know, in the moment, what feels right to you (or not). Having Actualizing Authority means that you can be spontaneous with your decisions. You don’t need time to contemplate or sit with decisions. You will know what is true for you immediately.
Generated Authority (Sacral Authority)
Generated authority means that you have a defined Sacral Center and that there are no additional energies influencing your Sacral. Your Sacral is the only decision-making center in your chart, and your Sacral response in the moment is the correct authority for you at any given point in time.
Creative Authority (Emotional Authority)
You are not designed to be spontaneous when you have Creative Authority. You need time to make decisions and learning to wait for clarity is essential to help you avoid experiencing disappointment in your life’s choices.
Creative Authority can influence the way the Strategy for your Type works. The Strategy for your Type is still essential, but if you have Creative Authority, you have to check in with your Strategy and sense how you feel over time.
Orchestrated Authority (Self- Projected Authority)
Only Projectors have self-projected authority. Self-projected authority comes from a channel connecting the Identity Center to the Throat Center with no other overriding energies defined in the chart, such as the Solar Plexus or the Spleen.
Self-projected authority means that you have to “see” your decisions reflected or projected through others to get clarity. In order to really know what is correct for you, you need to have a circle of close friends with who you can talk to about your choices. You need to hear yourself talking to others and see their response to know whether something is correct for you or not
Mental Projected Authority
Mental projected authority is also only experienced by Projectors with a defined Ajna to the Throat Center and no other overriding energies. Mental projected authority, just like self-projected authority, means that you have to talk to other people to get clarity about which invitations are right for you.
Resource Authority (Ego Authority)
Resource Authority means you have a defined Resource Center, and you don’t have Creative Authority.
Because the Resource Center is about having sustainable energy and resources (or not!), if you have Resource Authority, you won’t decide to do something unless you have the energy or the resources. It also can signal whether a choice is aligned with integrity or not.
The Planets In Your Body Graph
Let’s move now from the human figure to the table with all the numbers and planetary symbols. On the left side of the chart or flanking either side of the body graph you will see a series of red and black numbers and planetary symbols. This is called your birth chart. Your birth chart is fixed; it does not change during the course of your life.
Your Unconscious Personality
Your unconscious personality is defined by the red elements on your birth chart—these are aspects of your personality that are consistent but unconscious, meaning you don’t really have much control over these parts of your personality. Usually, with age, we become more aware of our unconscious personality. Your family and loved ones also usually know the unconscious elements of who you are.
The date in red is your unconscious birthday. The unconscious birthday is roughly three months prior to your birth and coincides with a large spurt in brain development in the cerebral cortex while a baby is in utero. It is approximately eighty-eight astrological degrees from the moment of your birth
Your Conscious Personality
The elements on the chart that are black are aspects of your personality that you are consciously aware of and, to a certain degree, have some control over.
The birth date in black is your actual birthday, called your conscious birthday. This is your conscious personality.
The Centers in Your Body Graph
The first things you may notice when you look at your chart are the nine geometric shapes. These shapes represent the nine centers, and their role is similar to the seven chakras. Each center is responsible for carrying and managing a certain frequency of energy, and it relates to a specific theme in our lives.
The nine centers and their themes are:
- Head: Inspiration
- Ajna: Concrete thinking, analysis and data
- Throat: Communication and action
- Identity: Self, love, and life direction
- Will: Willpower and value
- Emotional Solar Plexus: Emotional clarity
- Root: Adrenaline energy
- Sacral: Workforce and life-force energy
- Spleen: Survival, intuition, immune system, and time
Next, you might notice that some of the centers in your chart are white, while others are colored in. The white centers are undefined, or open. The defined centers are colored in.
Defined Centers
If a center is colored in, it is “defined.” Defined centers represent the energy that you radiate out into the world consistently, the aspects of your personality that are true all of the time, independent of any other factors in your environment. It can be raining, Mercury can be in retrograde, Mars can disappear out of the solar system, but your definition (the colored-in parts of your chart) always stays the same. Your definition comes from the position of the gates and the planets at the moment of your birth.
As you will learn, defined centers have their own issues, but overall they are much easier to manage than the sometimes traumatic experiences of open centers. Some good general advice is to know and live your Human Design strategy. It will empower you to always know what to do.
Open Centers
If a center is white, then it is undefined, or open. Open centers take in and amplify energy and information from the world around you. The energy in open centers is inconsistent because it changes depending on who you are with. It can also feel more intense than defined energy because it comes in waves and is always changing.
It is easy to assume that the energy in your open centers is yours, and sometimes you will try to fix an aspect of your personality, not realizing that you are behaving according to outside factors. Notice where your open centers are; these are the places where you have the potential to have the most pain until you understand how your energy works. But these open centers also hold the potential for your greatest wisdom as well.
The beauty in the defined and undefined centers lies in the fact that, individually, we are all simply parts of a greater whole. We all become completely defined when we are all together. We each bring pieces that energetically unify us all and offer us the opportunity to express all of the human experience.
The Channels In Your Body Graph
Notice how the nine centers are connected to one another through many lines. These lines are called channels, and there are thirty-two of them. The channel’s color tells you about an aspect of your personality:
Black channels carry personality traits that you are consciously aware of.
Red channels carry personality traits that you are not consciously aware of.
Checkered channels represent those particular personality aspects that are in your conscious and unconscious definition.
White channels represent open gates. You will always take in the energy of both gates from the world around you, and its expression through you will depend on your environment.
The Gates In Your Body Graph
At the end of each channel is a numbered gate, and the channel is named using these two gate numbers. For example, we might talk about the 34/20 channel, the Channel of Charisma, which connects Gate 34, the gate of power, to Gate 20, the gate of metamorphosis. The sixty-four gates correlate to the sixty-four hexagrams in the I Ching. Each defined gate in your chart adds a different “flavor” to your personality.
